Hi guys!
So you guys know I’ve been into Eurovision. A lot. No surprises there I’d hope.
But anyway, the songs had music videos, which I don’t usually watch.
If, for some reason, you have no clue what I’m talking about: a music video is a filmed piece of media that usually accompanies a song, usually to promote or add more meaning to a song.
Now, there are two purposes for the music video, because many music videos are just…meh.
A lot of weird stuff happening there. Then again, with the topics of most songs (love in some way or form), the music videos tend to reflect that. Not always well. Sometimes it’s kind of ick.
Obviously if you like those music videos: that’s fine. Everyone has their own taste.
However, those kinds of music videos made me a little uncomfortable, so I never did watch them, and made the connection that music video = ick.
Until Eurovision.
See, something odd about the Eurovision official channel is that for Kraj mene, despite the song having a music video, the National Final performance of Kraj mene is the one shown as “Official Music Video” instead.
So, I noticed this, and wondered what the actual music video was, since I was curious about Lavina.
And it’s a very simple music video, but it’s effective. Little movement until the very end, the emotional climax of the song.
The music video took a bit to grow on me, though. (appreciation takes time…I judged it too harshly)
But in the meantime, I wondered: what did the music videos for other songs look like?
So I went looking for some other music videos.
And I realized that some music videos tell stories. Just stories.
And they need looking at again and again.
So here are a few of my favorite music videos:
This song tells a story with the music video that doesn’t come across completely with the song. It expands upon itself, using symbols of a rose and recurring imagery to carry a point well.
This is the short version, as I’ve done an analysis of a way this song can be interpreted…including the music video.
I need to look at this music video again!
There is so much symbolism and imagery, like the fall to the water droplet, and I think there are references to Albanian culture I don’t get just yet.
This music video is so beautiful, especially the last shot. Just perfect.
I’m going to be honest: I don’t have exact words on what’s happening here. I can’t find a good translation of the lyrics, but what I can find is interesting.
There’s contrast in the music video, with the main colors of black and white…and there’s some indecipherable feeling that I pick up when I watch it.
The song is so soothing, and Leléka’s voice is so beautiful.
OF COURSE I HAD TO MENTION THIS.
Lavina always has such amazing music videos, and this one does not disappoint.
There’s always a story in their videos, and Fall Apart is so interesting to me because of it.
There’s fire and rain, and there are shots of both the band performing and what appears to be the perspective looking up from being buried in a grave.
There are so many ways to go with this music video. PLEASE GO LISTEN TO IT!!
UTOPIA – Alexandra Capitanescu
If I had a nickel for every time a rock/metal band I loved from Eurovision had a music video that has red and blue lighting, involves feasting at some point, and involves amazing storytelling, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. <- ]THIS LINK LINKS TO THE OTHER MUSIC VIDEO I AM REFERRING TO: ID BY LAVINA. THE MUSIC VIDEO CONTAINS TORTURE SCENES. PROCEED WITH CAUTION, IT’S AMAZING, BUT A HEAVY MUSIC VIDEO!]
Utopia is BRAND NEW, and by the time this blog is published, it’ll only be a day old.
The mix of outfits is interesting: Luca and Alexandra wear red, Thomas and Matei wear black, and Bogdan appears to be the only one who wears white.
The song is super amazing, and the fast flashing and setting are really interesting. Again, I’ll have to pick it apart later.
Give it a listen!
That’s all for this blog! If you guys have a favorite music video, please let me know why you like it :DD
See you next week!
