In my Hindu family, we celebrate a lot of festivals. In the city I live in, Milwaukee, We can tell that spring is almost here when the winter sports seasons are over and the spring sports season has begun. Several cultures have ways to celebrate the beginning of seasons. In order for us to give Winter a grand farewell, we do something similar to a color run.
In our Hindu-Nepali culture, we celebrate holi (Pronounced holy). Which is an ancient Hindu tradition and festival that dates back a long time ago. In this festival, we celebrate the victory of good over evil (If you are into mythological stories, I would recommend searching the story of holi to gain an understanding). Every year in Mid to late march, family and friends come together, bring dishes to share, socialize and then the fun begins. In my family, it is the only day of the year where you can be as childish as you want with no rules.
My top three favorite things about Holi are that it represents new beginnings in life. It’s out with the old and in with the new. My second favorite thing about Holi is that there is always a fun party and good food constantly being served. Finally, my last favorite thing is that you can be as childish as you want.During the pandemic we could not have a bigger holi due to COVID taking over all our fun. Last year, My mom and I went to ConnecticutConnecticut for a couple days and finally got to open up and have all the fun we wanted. I wish I could always relive the fun holi memories I have had from the past.
On behalf of Holi I want to share this poem with you that I wrote on the special occasion of Holi coming up.
Red, White, Green and Blue
Show off your natural hue
Purple, Orange, Yellow,
When we play holi, the neighbors hear us bellow
The gray, white ice in the rink,
Will turn into a soccer field in just a blink,
Enemies will turn into friends
And the fun lasts until the end
Kindness flies,
Hatred dies,
Uncles and Aunties make food,
If you don’t make a dish, your screwed
If you dare to intrude,
You are being rude
If you take holi madness personally,
You shouldn’t be celebrating holi
If someone throws colors at me, I would let it slide
But when its not holi, I would cry
This is the day to forget all pain
You can go all crazy until you are drained
