On April 25th of 2015, an earthquake, also known as the Gorkha earthquake, hit Nepal, destroying the 14-foot Dharahara in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Dharahara was built in 1825 by the first prime minister of Nepal. The Dharahara was a popular tourist attraction and still is. When the Dharahara fell it was at 9 stories tall after being reduced to 11, due to another earthquake in 1934. When the Dharahara fell, 50 Nepali citizens were killed. In the summer of 2019, me and my family went to Nepal. When we were there, the Dharahara was still in ruins, but construction was soon starting. The Dharahara was officially rebuilt, and opened to the public just a few days ago.
Additionally, the Dharahara is rebuilt way taller than before now sitting at 22 stories tall (236ft). According to the Nepali news the new Dharahara can be seen from miles and miles away because of its new height. The earthquake that destroyed the Dharahara was a 7.8 (Mw) earthquake and lasted for 50-58 seconds. “We were not ready for such a strong earthquake”, said the Nepalese citizens. Ever since this strong earthquake hit Nepal the Nepalese people are still trying to work on the damage done from six years ago. This earthquake not only took apart the tourist attraction it also destroyed many houses in Nepal, mostly in its capital Kathmandu, but not only did the earthquake cause buildings to fall, it also caused avalanches in the Himalayas, destroying camps and everything in its path.
