Hello everyone! I’m back again aha
If any of you are new here, or couldn’t tell from past posts, I love mythology. In fact, I actively compete in Certamen tournaments with my team as the mythologian.
Soon enough, I’ll be heading off to participate in another Certamen tournament. So I’ve been getting some Myth facts together as I study.
And I FOUND STUFF.
While these facts are somewhat cursed or disturbing (average mythology experience), I hope that they help you learn, entertain you, or otherwise occupy your mind.
- Endymion
So one time there was this shepherd Endymion, and he’s commonly listed as a son of Aethilius (a son of Zeus) and Calyce (a daughter of Aeolus). In the most common myth, the goddess of the moon Selene fell in love with Endymion and Endymion was put to sleep forever, in exchange for immortality and eternal youth.
Endymion sleeps a cave on Mount Latmus and had 50 daughters with Selene (while asleep…?), known as the Menae, the goddesses of the lunar months. There are other kids, but those are the important ones, I think.
- Thespius + Daughters
Bet you thought 50 kids was unique…
I’ll assume you know about Heracles and his 12 labors. Well, what nobody tells you is that stuff HAPPENED in between, before, and after those labors. There’s Pholus the centaur, Queen Omphale, Admetus and Alcestis, Lynus. But what I’m going to talk about is a labor in the beninging. (IN THE BENINGNG)
Before [or after, I dunno] his 12 labors, Heracles was asked by King Thespius of Thespiae to kill a beast called the Lion of Cithaeron. Heracles did. I won’t go into detail as I don’t exactly have a reliable source for this, but what I do know is that Heracles had a child with all 50 of Thalpius’s daughters. Great.
- Oceanus and Tethys
IF YOU THOUGHT 50 WAS A LOT OF KIDS
Oceanus and Tethys, children of Gaia and Ouranos, had 4,000 kids together. The most notable of which is Achelous, the guy who wrestled Heracles for Deianeira.
- Andromache
Andromache, Hector’s wife in the Illiad, was actually a daughter of Eetion, the king of Cicillian Thebe (not to be confused with Thebes) and had seven brothers.
I say had because Achilles and the Greeks sacked the city, and Achilles killed Eetion and Andromache’s seven brothers. Andromache’s mother died after, and eventually she was found by Hector and wed to him.
- Chryseis
Not that disturbing but confusing–Chryseis, the war prize who ’causes’ the spat between Achilles and Agamemnon near the start of the Illiad, is a daughter of Chryses who comes from a town called Chryse. Enjoy that.
Those are the five facts I’ve bestowed upon thee. Use them well.
Thank you for attending today’s odd myth session!
Let me know your favorite myth facts in the comments 🙂
Valete omnes!!
