                           Halloween Over the Years

Hello Everyone,

Hope you had a great Halloween!

Halloween is my favorite time of the year, not only for candy but the creative costumes people come up with. Halloween is also my favorite time in fall because it falls in between two Nepali festivals of Dashain and Tihar. Dashain ended last week but the celebration has not. Tihar, the Festival of Lights (AKA Diwali) is in a couple of days. So my parents have put up lights outside our house for the upcoming holidays.

Halloween is special to me because my parents go out trick or treating with me and my sister. We buy costumes with accessories and my mom buys a lot of candies for the trick or treaters. But my favorite part is sorting out and eating candies. Last year, there weren’t many costume options due to COVID-19 restrictions and we couldn’t go to many houses. But I gotta bake a cake and cookies. My favorite memory was of making the snickerdoodle cookies but unfortunately, they ended up burning. Why did it get burned? I don’t know. However, we enjoyed the day with our family.

When I was little I only wanted to dress up as Disney princesses. Now my options are a little more than the princess section.

On my first Halloween, I was tinker bell. My mom has shown me a couple of photos of me eating candy and trick or treating through my old Normandy apartment.

When I reached kindergarten, I became obsessed with Merida, a princess from the movie brave.

I had dressed up as a witch in first grade, Anna from Frozen in second grade, a black cat in fourth grade, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz in fifth grade, a girl from a sock hop in the 1950s, and someone from the 1980s era this year. I want to share a weird but funny fact. When I was in fifth grade, a friend told me that Santa Claus gave us an unexpected visit on Halloween and left Wisconsin a gift, which was snow. Snow in October, crazy right? In sixth grade I wanted a costume that was my size but they were either too small or too big for me. Next year, I want to go a little more creative with my costume.

I’m currently missing costume parties at my old school, JK Lee, and YMCA (where I used to go for swimming lessons, gymnastics). My favorite memory was the Our Sunday Project 1980s themed Halloween party. I remember when we used to make a lot of props for our party. It was quite hard because there weren’t many kids as much as we have now. Honestly, I kind of hated it, but at the end of the day, it was a huge success.

When I was in elementary school, my school used to have a costume party filled with food, a DJ, dancing, and more. But in middle school, we have costume day and it’s filled with cool costumes. In the first hour, My Social Studies teacher Mr. Lamers was Iron Man, he wasn’t really but he printed out images of irons and taped it onto his shirt. In my second-hour core class, Mrs. Stiyer, my Math Teacher, was dressed up as a pencil. During Spanish class, my teacher Senora Chalmers just wore a Halloween shirt. During Animation Studio, Mr. Minchk dressed up as a tree or something. In Language Arts, Mrs. Szukalski wore Minnie Mouse Ears and a Minnie mouse shirt and during the last period, Mrs. Feldmeier dressed up as a tourist.

I was just trick or treating on Saturday at my friend’s neighborhood and was amazed to find kids wearing some cool costumes. Such as competitors from Squid Games, Tigers, Show Characters as well as some homemade costumes. I enjoyed collecting a lot of candies and eating a lot too. It was fun trick or treating with my friend Lili and her sisters Sophie and Mia. On Halloween day, we have a Halloween party at our Sunday project meeting and in the evening  we will go trick or treating in my neighborhood. I have collected a lot of candles like Kit Kats and Almond Joys this year and I’m planning on donating half of my Halloween candles.

Next year during Halloween, I pray that there is a good costume for my size. Maybe in the next few years, I would stop dressing up for Halloween but my trick-or-treating obsession should never end.. Many people who have a strong religious view may not celebrate Halloween as they think it will summon the devil. I respect their opinion but our family still does it as long as we are respectful and take Covid precautions.
