A few months ago, I reviewed the “First Rule of the Climate Club” by Carrie Firestone. That book was amazing and motivated me to read another book about Climate Change/Activism. My mom had told me that there was another book written by Barbara Dee that was waiting for me in the library. I have read a few of Ms. Dee’s books and they were amazing. I was really looking forward to this book and finished it within 3 days!! I now present to you “Haven Jacobs saves the Planet”!
The story starts off with Seventh Grader Haven Jacobs, who has been suffering from eco-anxiety. They are affecting her grades, her sleep and even her friendships with her very close friends. She doesn’t tell people why she’s feeling this way. But one day she opens up after having a panic attack and running out of the science room while watching a video about melting glaciers. Haven decides to speak up about the importance of climate change and makes new friends who share the same interests as her. While doing science projects in the nearby river, Haven notices that the river water is polluted from chemicals and all the frogs are gone. They realized that this had happened because of the nearby factory called Gemba. Sadly, Haven’s dad works there and he can’t risk losing his job. Her protest and activism could cost her Dad’s job. What will happen next? How will Haven speak up about this issue? Does she face challenges? Will she make a difference? If you’re interested in climate change, I highly recommend you read this book.
This book reminded me of Greta Thunberg, a young Swedish activist who has spoken up several times on climate change. Greta was diagnosed with Aspergers by doctors after she suffered a lot of eco anxiety after finding out the truth about climate change. At the end of the day, Greta and Haven speak up and become heroes for their community. Barbara Dee’s books are really motivational and one of a kind. The author picks out serious topics and makes them easy to understand for readers like me. Climate change is a serious issue today and youth activists are equally important. I hope there are more books on climate change for children and there is increased awareness.
I hope everyone has a great October and finally, stay warm! Let’s save the planet!
