On October 14th 2023, Brookfield East High School hosted their annual homecoming dance for all the students and their invited guests. The tradition of homecoming had begun in 1910 in the University of Missouri where alumni had hosted a reunion at their Alma Mater. In the 1920s, several high schools around the United States began adapting this tradition. Today, Homecoming has been known to be one of the most important events of the school year and is celebrated with a football game, and a dance. It is not just a fun weekend for gathering with your friends, but it’s a time to celebrate school spirit, the victory of the football team, and the returning alumni.

Every year, the Brookfield East student council plans out the homecoming. The most important part of homecoming this year was the theme of the event. Given the popularity of the movie Barbie, the Barbie theme received the most nominations. As a member of the student council it was exciting to meet students from different grades and to work as a team, by sharing creative and innovative ideas in the process of creating new memories.

The week before homecoming, the student council decorated the hallways in a grade-level contest and was followed by a fun spirit week. On the Friday October 13th before the big dance, there was a school-wide pep assembly where we had a few Spartan alumni spotlights present including Sara Rodriguez, Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin, who shared her experience at Brookfield East. Other highlights were the homecoming court followed by the king and queen announcement. In the evening was the big football game against Sussex, Hamilton High School. Despite the rain, several spartans showed up and supported their school. Sadly , Hamilton high school won with a 49-18 win over East. But that didn’t stop anyone from giving up because the next day was the homecoming dance which was a day to remember.

The morning of October 14th was filled with excitement as the decoration committee members of the Council made their way to school to complete the final decorations. In the evening, many students went out for dinner with friends , and took pictures. The evening events consisted of singing, laughing, dancing and a whole lot of fun. Overall, it was a great experience for all students to celebrate their spartan spirit. As a freshman in high school, I feel lucky to be part of the student council for planning the event and work as a team under guidance of Mr Greuel, Senora Lentz and all these upperclassmen mentors for making this homecoming successful and memorable.
