On September 10th, Sewa USA and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh had collaborated to organize a fun fair at Wirth Park in Brookfield to raise funds to sponsor a child program. The funds are used to sponsor children in India who aren’t very fortunate to have an education like us. Sewa international is a nonprofit organization that serves people irrespective of race, faith, or gender. Along with a team of youth volunteers, I was able to be a part of this great effort to support a great cause. For the past two months, the youth volunteers had been working tirelessly in planning the fun fair to achieve the target of supporting the cause. There were more than 15 games planned by the youths. The activities included games like capture the flag, booths with trivia questions, drawing contests, just to name a few. There was also a raffle where people were able to win prizes. To my surprise, my mom won a raffle prize. There was also a food truck from the Taste of India restaurant that people enjoyed. Attendees were also able to sponsor a child program at a booth. My friends and I worked together to support each other as a team throughout the day to make the program a success. My booth was named the “Lollapalooza” where kids would pull a lollipop and if they had a red or purple dot at the end, they were able to pick their prizes.
After a long day of Fun Filled activities, we were exhausted but we’re proud of using our time for a good purpose. We all shared laughs, smiles and a sense of achievement. I met youth volunteers from different parts of Milwaukee and had an opportunity to network and collaborate. This was a great opportunity for me to develop leadership skills.
There were more than 300 attendees and we were able to raise above our target and had around 8 children sponsorships. I would like to participate in Sewa volunteer opportunities in the future and encourage youths to do community service.
I cannot forget to thank Our Sunday Project families and children for attending and supporting the fun fair.
