This summer for five weeks (June 21 – July 23), I attended summer school. I used to do summer school every year but had to attend virtually last year because of Covid. I was excited to go back to in-person summer school. We had our classes at Brookfield East High School (my future high school). The school was for four hours in the morning, from 8:15 to 12:10. I was taking three classes. They were Math 7 Compacted, Mock Trial, and Healthy Living.

It was my first time doing a mock trial. If you don’t know, a mock trial is an imitation trial. You act in court and do examinations, become witnesses, and work as a team. It was so much fun because I learned about court proceedings and so much more about legal terms. So in the Mock Trial, we learned about examinations, objections, and how to solve cases in courts.

My Math 7 Compacted class prepared me for 7th-grade math. It was a little hard at first, but later I really enjoyed it. In Math 7 Compacted, we completed three modules and got to learn about rate, proportions, integers, and percentages.

In my last class, which was healthy living, we did fitness stuff, mindfulness, relay races, teamwork, and trivia. Every Friday, we had Food Friday. We tried different snacks including apple nachos, banana splits, trail mix, and popcorn! Maybe not the healthiest choice but it was so much fun. Finally, in Healthy Living class, I got to meet some nice people, got to work out, eat good food, and learn fun facts.

I also had violin lessons every Monday for thirty minutes. I learned about variations and even learned a new song that I love to play.

Overall, I enjoyed my summer school. I met some new people and got connected with some old classmates. We had spirit days, Kahoots, games, and so much more. The last week of the summer school was fun-filled. I was excited to learn that I was going to do an actual mock trial a few days before the last day of summer school. I had to do two direct examinations and got objected to a few times. When you get objected to, you need to reason with the other team, why isn’t it an objection? If you’re not sure, you can ask your team or withdraw the questions. We goofed around a little but I was so happy to go back into my in-person schedule. I was initially nervous that someone would get infected because of Covid but I was happy to see many students wearing masks and most of them were fully vaccinated!
