Hey everyone! I’m taking a break from all of this pop culture stuff and fantasy and get into everyone’s worst nightmare: REALITY!!! Yaaayyy-
On Friday, the Our Sunday Project team had a Dashain Party. We hosted it at MECCA Sports Bar and Grill. It was full of music, dancing and comedy gold (or should I say comedy carbon, if you want to take me for granite OOHHHH-).
I was the MC of the entire show, and it was fun in general (even though we completely botched up the play lol). You can learn more of the details in Abby’s blog here.
But enough about Dashain! Now to the filler for today’s blog!
Yesterday, one of my friends sent me a riddle that involved a frog. I, being an absolute idiot at solving riddles, guessed the wrong answer and replied that I am less of a person that could solve riddles and more of a person that”could list 27 facts about birds”. She really wanted that! So, to prove her point, here are 27 facts about birds.
- At a whopping 9 ft (2.7 meters), the ostrich is commonly known as the biggest bird species,
- But in wingspan, the title is held by the wandering albatross, with some individuals having wingspans 11 ft (3.5 meters) long.
- In contrast, the smallest bird is the bee hummingbird, at a pint-sized 2.24 inches (5.7 centimeters).
- Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem “The Raven” has a raven in it due to Poe being inspired by Charles Dickens (who Poe looked up to), who had a pet raven named Grip
- Grip, like other ravens, could talk.
- Other birds that can talk are magpies, crows and (obviously) parrots.
- However, this avian speech is more of a form of mimicry than actual talking.
- The hoatzin is commonly known as the smelliest bird in the world.
- This is because the hoatzin is the only bird who has an entirely plant-based diet.
- The longest living bird was known as Cocky Bennett, a sulphur-crested cockatoo, who lived up to 120 years of age
- Sulphur-crested cockatoos are one of the most popular types of cockatoo. Nigel from Rio is one!
- JaidenAnimations has two birds, Ari and Tofu.
- Ari and Tofu are both green cheeked conures.
- Remember the hummingbird from a while back. They are the only birds that can fly backwards
- Chickens can’t fly because they have marrow in their bones, while birds that CAN fly have hollow bones.
- Owls swallow their food whole and spit them back out as pellets.
- This is because owls don’t have teeth, and the pellets are actually bones that can’t be digested in the bird’s stomach.
- The fastest bird is the peregrine falcon, which can reach speeds up to 240 miles (about 386 km) in a single hour
- Despite its cute appearance, puffins make low, croaking noises. Don’t believe me?
- Believe it or not, blue jays can mimic other bird calls
- The kakapo is one of the rarest birds on the planet, with only about 244 individuals still alive today.
- Birds have an internal ear structure, so they have no present ears on the outside of their body
- The kiwi bird lays eggs that weigh almost a fifth of the parent’s weight
- Puffins can hold up to 10 fish at a time!
- Chickens can make up to 200 distinct sounds
- Penguins are the only flightless birds that can swim
- There are more than 11 thousand species of birds.
That it! Seeya later!
