Every year, an event called “The Academy Awards” or “The Oscars” is held to nominate and give awards for artistic or technical merit for the film industry. On March 12th 2023, several talented actors/artists had arrived at the Oscars to cheer others on and celebrate their award nominations. I had enjoyed watching the winners and nominees at the Oscars. I was pleasantly surprised to see the name of the award winning documentary/ short film flashing on TV. This year’s Oscar winning documentary is The Elephant Whisperer, directed by an Indian female director Kartiki Gonsalves. The documentary is based on the story of a couple in India who were lucky to bring the Oscar award home.

During my spring break,I decided to watch the elephant whisperer on Netflix because I was wondering why people were so obsessed with this documentary. Today, I will be writing a review on what I liked about the documentary and important aspects to look for.

The Elephant Whisperer starts off with the story of a couple, Bomman and Bellie, living in south India and committing their life to care for an orphaned elephant, Raghu whom they treat as their son. The love for Raghu and another baby elephant Ammu help them forget the loss of their loved ones. This documentary shows the viewers in the world that we should be more aware of our nature and its biodiversity. It highlights the fact that although there may be a barrier between humans and animals, compassion and kindness can bridge the gaps. As humans we should learn that at the end of the day, all living beings have the same feelings and deserve to live in a life with love and care. The natural beauty, background music and the incredible interaction between humans and elephants is what touched me most.
