This year, the week of October 1-7th, was banned books week, and the book I am going to review today is from the list of banned books. The hate you give is written by author Angie Thomas and there is a movie based on this book.
In the area of Garden Heights, a dangerous black neighborhood, Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter is trying to navigate her way out of her life. Being one of the only black kids at Williamson Prep school, and managing her two worlds both at school, and at home. When Starr witnesses her childhood best friend, Khalil gets shot by white policemen for being questioned by police, his death causes controversy and debates as he was possibly present in handling drug dealing.
This strongly affects the Carter family, as Starr was a witness. It meant that she had to lie, and shove her feelings down. Things get worse when the loss of love, trust, family and friendship come into play. What will Starr do? How will she fight for her rights? How will she fight for Khalil and the black community? If you’re into books that cover the topics of activism, family, friendship, racism and advocacy, this book is just for you.
