Hello Everyone,
This school year, we had to do a unit on a book we were reading called The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This book has got to be the best book I have read this year and possibly the best English class unit. This book covers the theme of coming of age, love, friendship and standing up for what’s right.
The story starts out with a group of teens in a gang in the west side of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1965. They are known as the Greasers for their greasy hair and are rivals with the Socs short for the socials which are a bunch of rich kids from the other side of where they live. The narrator is Ponyboy, a 14 year old Greaser who lives with his two older brothers Sodapop and Darry. The greasers gang covers different rebellious teens who care for each other as brothers, and they go through conflicts with the other gang, the Socs. This book covers the story of Ponyboy’s life as a teenage orphan as a gangster in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this book, Ponyboy overcomes life changing obstacles, and learns more about himself as a young teen boy. In this book, you will see the life of a rebellious, but loving gang that cares and defends one another in need. The book was such an emotional, but hilarious rollercoaster and I would highly recommend this book to middle grade readers coming of age. This book is also a movie, which I heard is really good and I look forward to watching it this week.
Happy New Year everyone!
