The earth is divine, look around you, look outside! Do you see green trees, beautiful flowers , the bright sun, the splendid fluffy clouds? Now imagine the day , when all of that is destroyed. It’s true we’re all gonna leave this earth someday but the world will be falling apart for a bad reason. And our future generations will not be able to enjoy this beautiful planet earth that we inherited from our forefathers. Human actions will be responsible for the destruction.Climate change is a major threat to humanity and has resulted from inappropriate human activities such as pollution, deforestation, and use of chemicals. Misuse of modern technology has ruined our mother earth. For the last few years, I have been invested in climate change and what we can do to stop it. I pray that one day, people will wake up and come to realize the truth about climate change and decide to take it seriously. As a book blogger I have shared books that talk about climate change and youth advocacy. In order to spread more awareness among middle grade readers , I am presenting to you, the newly published book Two Degrees by author Alan Gratz. Mr. Gratz is known to write books about wars and historical events. One of my favorite books written by Mr. Gratz would be Ground Zero. Two Degrees is a book that was just published weeks ago and I was really happy I could read it when it just came out. This book has 3 different plots which covers the important issues of the climate crisis. I hope you all enjoy this review!!
It starts off with the character, Akira, a Japanese-Norwegian girl from California. Akira and her father love horses, one day, Akira and her father are stuck in a california fire and are separated from each other. Akira is like me, a teen who’s also invested in the act of climate change whereas her dad doesn’t even believe in climate change. Akira plans to save her family from the fire. How will she do that?
The next two characters are Owen and George (Their Friendship name is Mac and Cheese) two young teens from Churchill, Manitoba who share an interest in polar bears. One day, they are mauled and stalked by polar bears, where they come to realize that the nature of polar bears has been getting worse. It talks of melting glaciers and impact on wildlife. What will happen next?
The last character is Natalie, a Cuban girl from Miami who’s facing challenges from a hurricane. She has no place to hide and can’t find her mother and her aunt. Well, what will happen next?
They all wonder, what has happened to the world? How can we fix this mess? Although these characters come from different backgrounds, they all reunite at the end of the story. If you’re into climate change activism like me, I highly recommend this book to you! I hope that when I’m older, I can carry on the legacy Greta Thunberg and several Climate activists have carried before me. In my opinion Having a climate clubs in school might motivate youth.
If you’re wondering what two degrees means, science has shown that the world has gotten warmer by two degrees. In the Paris climate treaty, scientists had set up a goal of not getting earth temperature increase beyond two degrees.Scientists predict that an increase above two degrees will bring disaster. This represents that there will be a fierce climate with deaths, diseases, natural disasters, horrible storms, and extinctions. While reading this book, I felt worried and scared knowing the reality of climate change. But I am hopeful that with everyone’s support , we can make the world a better place.
Here, I want to end this review with a positive note from author Alan Gratz.
“It’s your world. Your future. It’s up to you to decide what you want that future to look like, and what you can do to make it happen”.
Have a good remainder of your October and beginning of November everyone!
