Hey guys!
I just got back from a week of Girl Scout Camp. Yes, it’s already that week of summer.
For those of you wondering what I mean in the title (I Went Back), read my blog I did about this last year: https://oursundayproject.com/girl-scout-camp-good-bad-just-glad-its-over/
I went back to the same camp this year, still as a PA, but worked at a Station, not a Unit.
What that means is instead of working with the same kids for the whole five days, I was assigned to different places around camp to teach kids stuff.
(Stuff that I had to learn first. Which took me the first three walkthroughs.)
Fun.
Anyway, I didn’t have to see the same kids for a week. So that was fun, they couldn’t annoy me as much as they did before.
…That does not mean, however, that I wasn’t annoyed at all. Or had no problems.
On Monday, I was assigned to work in the kitchen, meaning counting out snacks (string cheese and goldfish) and packing rations for the next day.
Quite dull, I know. But surprisingly stressful.
I think now that adults should spend less time talking to each other and more time telling PA helpers what to do. You know, so they’re not freaking out over what they should do and constantly asking for what to do.
BUT THAT’S JUST ME.
I did meet a really nice PA named Fin, who became a fast friend of mine at camp. I also met some not-as-nice people who gave a poor attitude the whole time.
Now I am the definition of a poor attitude, but can you at least pretend like you want to be here?
Fin and I ended up serving slushies (that’s a camp thing), but we had to serve the Sibling unit, meaning very very small children.
Who were hyper and had no sense of personal space. Slightly off-putting.
Kitchen was fun, but I was glad not to do i again.
Tuesday was the. MOST burning out.
I worked at Trailblazing with a girl named Bumblebee (another new friend!!) and a few PAITs (girls who will soon be PAs).
It ended up being stressful.
Trailblazing is supposed to be tying knots and poison ivy, though the adult added a couple of things like pond animals. I’m fine with that.
It wasn’t great, though, when the kids messed up in a place I had no clue how to fix (how did you mess up there?) and the adult assumed I didn’t know how to tie the knot and got frustrated with me.
Even though I KNEW how to tie the knot but was confused on how to explain it?? Hello???
A similar thing happened on Wednesday (fishing with the same adult), though I was mainly confused on what I had to be doing.
Also, she told us to walk there and a few minutes later drove past in a golf cart :\
And I had to work with her again on Friday. For Camp Cleanup Support.
We weren’t given clear instructions on where to go/what to do after lunch (and being yelled at by the adult), so we just floated around and got pulled into helping. And nearly falling down the stairs because heavy boxes.
But enough of that. Let’s talk about camp highlights!
- Asking a child “blue or purple” for slushie flavor and getting “rainbow” as a response
- finding a smol painted turtle and naming him Bob. also accidentally setting off a chain of naming animals after Minions characters. The snapping turtle in the pond is named Stuart now.
- Singing EPIC: The Musical songs with Bumblebee for no reason lul
- My old unit remembering the fake name I gave them and me going along with it because I liked the name
- Shoutout to the child during fishing who got a hook through her finger, looked at it, went, “it’s ok” put the worm on the hook, and left (I was freaking out)
- Buying a silli baby bear from the trading post. He is my child.
- This gem of a conversation –
- At Archery – while waiting for her turn, this girl is kneeling on the ground and looking under tables. She looks up at me and asks, “Where did all the pillbugs go? They were here on Monday.”
- I shrug because I was NOT here on Monday and I didn’t know there were pillbugs.
- The girl, WHILE SMILING, says – “I named my pillbug Robert because my great-grandpa’s name was Robert and he died recently :D”
- Me: “OH–“
- The girl, still smiling – “So the pillbug is my great-grandpa :)))”
- Me: “I’m sorry–“
- Then the girl just kept looking for pillbugs 😭
- They brought a firetruck in just to hose kids. I got drenched. Then my sister did not want a hug. Sad.
And that’s about it!
I do recommend Girl Scout Camp as it’s a great way to make friends. Just be prepared for post-camp burnout ;-;
Anyways bye everyone and see you next week!
