Hey everyone! The mythkid is back. And the mythkid is angry.
So I went to watch the Odyssey movie, directed by Christopher Nolan, with a couple of friends a while back. You know, average hanging out. I don’t watch many movies, but I wanted to check this one out: You know. It’s the Odyssey. I love the Odyssey. I love mythology. I had hope that this could be something good.
…I hoped for too much.
Mythology adaptations are USUALLY horrible. Not ALWAYS, but usually NOT mythologically accurate. But I HAD HOPE.
And man, Christopher Nolan. I am disappointed.
There was so so so much wrong with the movie. Let’s ignore the whole part where he messed up the environment and land for his movie. Yeah. That could be a whole other blog. But my job is to discuss the MYTHOLOGY. So here’s what I was MOST upset about. Because I was upset about ALL of that. But then this blog would be too long.
SINON IN THE UNDERWORLD
Ok. This is one of my biggest issues.
Not only the pronunciation of Sinon, but Sinon. Being there. And dying. Getting killed.
First of all, I don’t think it’s a good look to cast Elliot Page as Sinon only to kill him off. Just rubs me the wrong way.
Second, I don’t think the above is a good idea ESPECIALLY since SINON DOESN’T DIE.
Sinon begs Priam for MERCY and that is GRANTED to him. In fact, for a long time, I thought HE was the one who opened the Trojan Horse for the Greeks. In any case, while he does not, he DOES NOT GET KILLED. Thus, Odysseus does NOT speak to Sinon in the Underworld. Sinon doesn’t call him out for anything. BECAUSE HE’S NOT DEAD.
Honestly? I think EPIC’s cut Elpenor song did it better. Elpenor made good points, and he DID IN FACT DIE.
Oh, and I LOVE how the Underworld is PARTLY CLOUDY. And the spirits are ZOMBIES. And how the Underworld is referred to as HELL multiple times. IN ANCIENT GREECE.
I also loooove the part where they cut out Anticleia. THAT EMOTIONAL MOMENT.
Circe gave us. FIVE pages. FIVE pages of Underworld instruction. On how to get there and summon the spirits. ONLY FOR NOLAN TO MESS IT UP. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
THE SUITORS BEING ONE PERSON
Okay. First of all. Antinous is chopped. I hate the hair.
But I didn’t KNOW that was Antinous. Because his mannerisms are that of Eurymachus, he dies like Leodes, he’s in love with Melantho which is a Eurymachus thing. Eurymachus dies like Antinous. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
DETAILSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS [THE BROOCH]
THE MOVIE BROUGHT UP THE BROOCH ODYSSEUS WEARS. THE ONE PENELOPE GAVE HIM. It is described as a HOUND throttling a FAWN in GREAT detail.
THE MOVIE BRINGS UP THE BROOCH!! So do they describe it? C’mon, they have to, they’re gonna–
“It was a picture of Athena.”
NOOOOO IT WASN’T
The bards who sung the Odyssey, especially the copy we have now, PUT DETAIL INTO THAT. UGHHH
WHERE IS PEISISTRATUS??????

THEY MESSED UP PYLOS AS A WHOLE. IT WAS AFTER SPARTA. THAT NEVER HAPPENED.
AND WHERE IS PEISISTRATUS??????????? Where is my boy??? Why is he never here?? Where are his insights and joy??? Where is Telemachus’s support?? Grrrrrghhhhh
